The California Rodeo: July 16–19
The 107th (or thereabouts) California Rodeo Salinas runs Thursday through Sunday, July 16–19, starting at 4:00 PM on Thursday. This is one of the biggest professional rodeos west of the Mississippi — sanctioned competition across bareback riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, barrel racing, and more. Around the main arena, the Salinas Sports Complex track fills with specialty acts, the Pony Express Race, Freestyle Bullfighting, and plenty of crowd-pleasing extras.
Night-by-night format: Each evening typically has themed entertainment, a full rodeo program, and late-night activity. Weekends (Friday night and Saturday) tend to be the highest-energy sessions and the most attended.
Best night for a group outing: Saturday, July 18 — full rodeo card, typically the biggest night, and the one most South Bay visitors pick when they're choosing a single evening.
Transportation to Salinas Sports Complex
The Sports Complex sits at 1034 N Main Street, accessible from North Main Street or Maryal Drive between the arena and softball complex. The parking lots are large but fill fast on weekends and for the Miranda Lambert show.
From Morgan Hill, Gilroy, or Hollister, you're looking at a 30–45 minute drive south on US-101. That's easy driving — but it's also a drive home at 10 PM or later after a night at the rodeo or concert, which is exactly when you don't want to be the designated driver.
